The Transilvania International Film Festival (TIFF) returns to Sibiu, from July 7 to July 10. It is the 16th year in which TIFF brings to Sibiu the most awarded productions of the season. Over 25 films and cine-concerts will take place in two outdoor spaces, but also in the cinema. TIFF Sibiu will take place in Huet Square (all events here will have free acces), in Habermann Markt / Habermann Square and at Cine Gold. The slogan of the edition is "Make Films, Not War", a response to the war in Ukraine and a call for creation, not destruction.
The tickets are now on sale on tiff.eventbook.ro, but also on the official TIFF app.
On the first day of the festival, movie goers will watch the Official Competition, a film applauded at the Venice and San Sebastián film festivals. The latest production of the Argentine directorial duo Mariano Cohn and Gastón Duprat will give viewers the chance to see Antonio Banderas, Penélope Cruz and Oscar Martínez on the big screen. Also on Thursday is the premiere of Operation Mincemeat, directed by John Madden, starring Colin Firth. A World War II drama, the film is an ingenious spy story. The program of the first day also includes screenings of Alcarràs, the film that won the Golden Bear in Berlin in 2022, directed by Carla Simón, but also Cut !, a zombie comedy-drama made by the original Michel Hazanavicius, which opened this year's Cannes Festival.
The program also includes the most awaited Romanian films of the season: Metronom, directed by Alexandru Belc, winner of the Directing Award in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes 2022, will be screened in Habermann Markt on Friday, July 8th. The list of Romanian films continues with the premiere of Weddings, Baptisms, Funerals (r. Alexandru Lustig), with Șerban Pavlu in the main role, but also with the preview of A Higher Law (r. Octav Chelaru), Nothing about love (r. Florin Piersic Jr.), but also You Are Ceausescu To Me (directed by Sebastian Mihailescu), the documentary that won the award in the What's Up, Doc? at TIFF 2022, or Miracle (directed by Bogdan George Apetri), the feature film that won the Romanian Film Days award at TIFF 2022.
Moviegoers have the chance to watch on the big screen the innovative Everything Everywhere All at Once, a comedy about multiverses that has become a super hit in the USA, which will have a single screening in Sibiu, on Saturday, from 21:45 in Piata Habermann.
Sibiu residents are also expected to enjoy two impressive cine-concerts: Häxan, the Swedish horror masterpiece directed by Benjamiin Christensen in 1922, will be accompanied live by artist Maatus Pealler on Friday, July 8, at 9:45 pm in Huet Square. The Lodger, the remarkable feature film signed by Alfred Hitchcock in 1927 and inspired by the story of Jack the Ripper, will be accompanied live by DJ DUBASE, on Sunday, July 10, at 9:45 pm, also in Huet Square.
Children have plenty of films to choose from as part of the EducaTIFF, on weekend mornings, at CineGold: I am Zlatan (directed by Jens Sjögren), Playground (dir. Laura Wandel) or La Vraie Famille (d. Fabien Gorgeart).
The TIFF Sibiu screenings in Huet Square and within the EducaTIFF program at Cine Gold are free. Access to EducaTIFF movies is based on booking a ticket with 0 value. No reservation is required for Huet Square.
The complete program of the four days of the festival can be discovered on sibiu.tiff.ro and on the festival’s Facebook page.
